Origin...

The airport site was selected in the 1940's when the residents of the Town decided to construct an airport on one of the landing fields used by the original barnstormers.  The unpaved field was originally owned by the Springerville-Eagar Airport Corporation until the Town of Springerville acquired the land in 1948.

Expansion...

The airport remained unpaved until 1962 when the Town graded and paved Runway 3-21.  The following year Runway 3-21 was extended to 4,400 feet and strengthened.  From 1968 to 1972, using state and federal funding, the Town acquired additional land, extended runway 3-21 to 5,600 feet, provided runway turnarounds and a stub taxiway to the main ramp, and installed a fuel pump, tanks and lights.  The State purchased a beacon for the airport in 1969.  In 1973 the Town reconstructed the ramp and installed Medium Intensity Runway Lights.  Between 1979 and 1984, a 3,900 foot parallel taxiway to runway 3-21 was constructed, 50 acres of additional land was acquired, security fencing was installed, and runway 3-21 was extended to 6,600 feet.

Between 1987 and 1995, the Town has constructed a 4,589 foot cross-wind Runway 11-29, expanded the ramp, constructed parking areas for both long and short term parking, constructed a 10,000sf hanger with attached 4,000sf terminal/fixed based operator facility and extended Runway 3-21 to 8,425.  In addition, the Town acquired additional land and easements to accommodate the runway and clear zones for Runway 3-21 and installed a paved perimeter road to the south end of Runway 3-21.

Today...

In 1994, the FAA issued a grant to construct a parallel taxiway for Runway 11-29 and install 14,000lf of perimeter fencing.  Between 1995 and 2004, the Town received grants to install PAPI, precision approach path indicator, lights, reconstructed the runways and aprons, installed waster and sewer line to the airport and installed 3-phase power and a water well.  In 2006, using funds from the 2003 perimeter fence grant,  the Town installed additional security in the form of a key code entry gate for the terminal/FBO and main apron/ramp.
